Our Local Businesses
We hope everyone is staying healthy and safe during these challenging times. Covid-19 has brought about a lot of change to our community and in our daily lives. The effects of these circumstances are being felt by many.
In an effort to support our community the Balmy Beach Rugby Club has already stepped up with our Blood Drive Campaign. With all this extra time and energy on our hands it has us asking ourselves what we can do to help.
These circumstances have proven to be difficult particularly for businesses. Many of these businesses have supported us in the past and we are looking to help them out in this time of need.
We recognize the large role that sponsors play in our […]
Blood Donations
View the Blood Donot Photos Below…
Hey everyone, obviously the world is in a bit of a crazy state at the moment. With our rugby seasons on pause, we figured we could take this time to do something as a club to make a meaningful impact in our community and add some competition into the mix as well.
So here’s the deal: In a time of crisis and uncertainty we need our Rugby Clubs and Sports Sections to get out there and donate blood!
Make an appointment to donate blood. When you donate, please wear something balmy related or something blue and gold (t-shirt, shorts, socks, whatever). While or after donating take a picture and […]
Myles Martin – Rugby Alumni Chairman
Hi all!
Just wanted to drop a quick line and introduce myself. For those who don’t know me, my name is Myles Martin a recently retired player from the blue and gold. As Gerry mentioned, I will be your Balmy Beach Alumni Chairman. I recognize I have some very large shoes to fill and I know I can’t do it alone. There are some very special people who make up this group and they should be recognized as well.
Kyle Nichols, Gord Young, , Andrew Steele, Adam Marshall, Paul Mathieson, Rick Chambers, Glenn Miller & Lisa De Sario
I think that all of us combined can probably do half the job Gerry has done for the last […]
Message from Kerry Singh aka Huggy
Request from Huggy! I’m writing to ask for your help by reaching out to your connections on my behalf to inquire about potential paid co-op job opportunities. Currently, I’m searching for a co-op job as a Business Analyst, or similar role with a September 2019 start date. My preference would be an employer within the technology sector or within the technology functional area of a company. I realize that you do not have technology backgrounds but you might have a friend, family member or other connection who does.
I’ve been following your weekly e-mails but haven’t managed to attend a Beach home game yet because I have a Saturday morning class at George Brown College that carries over into […]

Scott Hendry – Hamilton Hornets
Fellow Alum,
I am writing a post I never thought I would have to.
I brought the Hamilton Hornets down on the weekend for round 2 of the Gee Gage Cup.
A spirited match against the 2nds, with no on-field issues. A good clean game by both sides.
We had a full side of 23 and about 10 old boys down supporting plus a couple of folks in from overseas.
I was excited to have them back to the club to show it off and enjoy a little Balmy Beach Rugby hospitality. Most made it down.
I was shocked and saddened by the total lack of rugby etiquette displayed by the 2nds. No beer with your opposite #. No banter with the opposition. No chucking shit […]

I mentioned that we are initiating a program for Juniors to assist in Jr development. It is called HOOPS HOOPS: Help Optimize Outstanding Potential
Balmy Beach Junior Rugby, Balmy Beach Rugby Alumni and the Balmy Beach Club are proud to announce a new program to help develop the potential of our junior players.

Great seeing two nice beach wins on consecutive weekends, but doubt I will go to any more after going to club twice and not one player (ours or opposition showing up at BBC following the game. Exception is PEI Liam who was there with his lovely gal. Get it together off the field as well as on.
Brian Spanton – Email: Brian.Spanton@cra-arc.gc.ca
Good day lads, good win Saturday vs. Oakville. Our next match is Saturday August 12th at home vs Lindsay. Might be a good day to buck the trend of pinting post-game at the pitch and getting back to The BBC and laying on some beer and burgers for our guests. They are a good […]
John “Fox” Pineo
John’s Obituary:
http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/thestar/obituary.aspx?n=john-pineo&pid=184442315
Many of you know the “Fox” as an “Original” member of the very first Balmy Beach Rugby team (check out the photo at the club), and as a past president of the club for many years and one of few lifetime members!
The “Fox” has been fighting a very rare blood disorder for about 5 years now, and as expected it has finally reached a stage where the blood transfusions are not longer effective.
The Fox has decided to control the situation and effectively “go out” on his own terms. Fox is in good spirits and has been spending time with family and friends…mostly farting and telling old war stories! This […]

A Beach Perspective on Two Classic Athletes
Far be it for me to try and recap the storied careers of two sporting icons, as there are countless others who can do it so much better. Nevertheless, if you were born in a certain era you got to see two immortals that we have lost in the past week. I was one of the fortunate ones to see both Ali and Gordie in their primes.
One was brash, outspoken, both reviled and loved by many, because of his ways. He often referred to himself as “the greatest.” Arguably he was the best boxer of all-time. I first saw Ali live when he trained in Boston in 1965, for his fight with Sonny Liston, in Lewiston, Maine. The other was humble […]
Andrew Steele
Our sympathies are extended to Steeler and his family upon the passing of his father. Visitation is at McDougall & Brown on Kingston Rd from 6-9 on Thursday.

Huggy Writes
I am writing to express my sincere thanks and gratitude to the Alumni for their generous support of my recent campaign to help fund the costs of a winter tire package and general maintenance expenses of my wheelchair van. I am happy to say that the majority of the contributions came from rugby guys, particularly Balmy Beach RFC Alumni! Up the Beach!
Last winter was my first winter driving the new van. I learned from that experience that I would definitely need winter tires to be able to operate the van safely in our winter driving conditions with snow and ice covered roads. My van has a 12-inch lowered floor so I need […]
Scott Dunham – Harvey Jaanuson Award
It is with great humility that I accepted the Harvey Jaanuson award on Friday night. I am blown away by this honour, and I can only hope to extol the virtues and attributes of the man for which the award was named. I have heard stories of Harvey, and I think that the way he approached the game is what rugby is all about – hard as nails on the field and a gentleman off of it. It is truly in the spirit of Balmy Beach rugby that we continue this tradition. As always I take pride in wearing the blue and gold, and hope to for years […]

Matt King
Matt says…I would like to send a very warm and sincere thanks to the Balmy Beach Rugby Football Club in Toronto for hosting a enjoyable and supportive fundraiser at their beautiful beach-side clubhouse. The event was full of friendly and familiar faces of all ages with plenty of kind words and offers of support. Jim Drohan, who MC’d the event as an add-on to the junior awards ceremony, was extremely generous with his kind comments of support. Over the past number of years, Jim has been the cornerstone of a blossoming beach mini-rugby program that continues to foster growth and community engagement. It’s this sense of community, where rugby feels like a way of life rather than just a sport, […]

Fundraiser for Matt King
Sunday Sept 13 11am-4pm @ Balmy Beach Club
Balmy Beach Rugby Alumni, in conjunction with the Calgary Canucks, are holding a fundraiser for Matt King on Sun. Sept 13 at the Club(11am-4pm) Matt came to the Beach from UCC and he enjoyed a very successful career with Beach and Ont Rugby. He starred at U of W and Captained Cambridge. Matt played many matches for Canada, including the 2003 World Cup. Matt was the initial coach of our Beach Academy Squad.
Matt is presently unable to work and is in constant pain from a disease known as EDS( Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome) This affliction is not curable and the treatments incur costs well above Provincial guidelines!Hence Matt’s need for assistance and […]
MacSween – Winter in Australia
Good to see the boys are still dominating top of the table. Hoping you can pass this email on. Hope all is well back home. Life’s great down under, let me tell ya.
I’ve been playing for the University of Queensland here in Brisbane. Carol and I are living in an apartment in St. Lucia, a suburb of Brisbane, and only a few minutes walk to the campus and our fields. It’s Winter down here, but we’re still feeling the sunshine in the low 20’s, so I can’t complain.
Rugby is going well for me. I arrived mid season, so I’ve had to work my way up to the 1st grade team, which is who I’m playing with now. We’re in […]

Photo Gallery slideshow for the 60th!!!
Nine members of Balmy Beach Rugby Football Club’s original 1955 team were present for the festivities, held at Toronto’s Balmy Beach Club on May 22.
(TORONTO, ON) – It was six decades ago that twenty teenagers banded together, bringing a mix of competitive spirit, raw talent, a desire to learn a new sport, and a never-back-down attitude to form Balmy Beach’s inaugural rugby side.
The rest, as they say, is history.
On the evening of May 22, more than 225 current club members, alumni, and special guests packed Toronto’s iconic Balmy Beach Club to celebrate the roots of the rugby club; […]

McCormick Cup 2014
Cup Photos October 2014
Take a look at some Cup Photos
WOW! A Cracker! Our 14th Cup is in the books. 27-22 over the Scottish. We continued to play with skill and poise as we have all year. This time, however the Scottish seemed determined to throw us off track with a relentless attack of their own and almost succeeded, but not quite! To a man, each Beacher was pushed to give his all and it proved enuf as we hung on with a stalwart defense in the waning minutes to thwart siege after siege by the Scots. Sure made the beer taste even better! Excellent job, great season. Lots of hard work with kudos to all.
Gee Gage Cup 2014
Beach 2’s save the best for last in 38-25 victory over Scottish. With a somewhat sluggish start we were behind until the last 20 min when the afterburners kicked in and we roared away to victory and the first cup of the day! With “the Dude’s” leadership, Bushe controlling the helm and the speed of the younger lads, its a hard combo to beat. Great job and enjoyable to see. A fitting and deserved end to the season.
