The ORU I’s kicked off against Brantford I’s at T&G in a thrilling rematch of last year’s McCormick Cup final, and perhaps a sneak peak of this year’s final match up as well. Beach went up quick into the match capitalizing on a quick penalty to kick points going up 3-0. Shortly after Beach snuck in a try in the corner to put us up 10-0. Brantford rallied and put in two quick back to back tries to make the score 10-14. Another penalty gave us the opportunity to kick points once again bringing us within 1pt. One more score from Brantford before half time would see the score 13-21 going into the half. The second half saw a flurry of scores, and a couple injuries on both sides, with Brantford finishing on top 33-42. This was a great competitive game, and we are looking forward to a possible rematch in the McCormick Cup Final later this year.

The Gents take a few weeks off as the McCormick Cup tournament starts on September 7th vs Burlington.

U16s Finals – After two convincing wins over Waterloo County (26-0) and Peterorough Pagans (12-0) on Junior Cup day, the weather drove the players into the shed at Fletcher’s Field. When the rain didn’t let up, the final match versus Oakville was pushed to Tuesday evening back at Fletcher’s. To ensure a “proper” match, the usual 30 min cup match was extended to the standard 60 mins.

Under greying skies, the Cru and Beach kicked off for a gold medal match to decide who was the best U16 Boys team in Ontario. After crossing the try line early and some extended deliberation between the Match Official and AR – the first try of the match was scored by Balmy Beach’s Rylan Bozzer. Hard-nosed breakdowns and dominant scrums were the foundation of a strong Beach offence that continued to eat away at Cru territory and make gains. Prop and all-around open-field menace Sam “Big Red” Meikle decided to lead from the front and crash over for the second try of the match. Not to be dissuaded, the Cru pulled out some tricks and crossed in the corner, after missing the convert the score was 14-5 Beach.

Early in the final 30 minutes, sustained razors deep in the Cru red zone created increasing pressure, and a quick dummy from Adam DeNoble opened a gap to allow the speedster enough room to break the line and touch down, he made his own convert to bring the score to 21-5.

After the Cru brought on fresh legs with their “replacements” (and a few head scratchers from the match official) the golds from Oakville popped in two quick tries, and the Beach found themselves under pressure for the first time all season at 21-19.

After a continued strong lineout performance, the Beach pulled down the throw inside the Cru zone and Bozzer initiated a patented mid-field crash. The forwards executed flawlessly to pull an already stretched Cru defence back towards the sideline with Big Red smashing through several tentative tacklers to put the game away with a final try. With the convert, the final score was 28-19.

Myles Martin Weekly Alumni Report for July 29th

Please mark this in your calendar – Wednesday September 18th – This year, the Alumni are pulling out all the stops to celebrate the legendary 35-year rugby career of Claude St. Germain with an unforgettable roast! 🤣🏉 Join us for an evening filled with laughter and camaraderie as four fantastic speakers take the stage to humorously roast Claude all night long. Enjoy mouthwatering food and a lively atmosphere as we honor a true rugby icon. 🌟🍽️ But that’s not all! By attending, you’re also supporting a fantastic cause—a portion of your ticket will go towards bolstering our Junior Rugby Program. 🙌 Don’t miss out on this epic celebration—come for the laughs, stay for the memories, and help support the future of rugby! 🏆🎉 More details to come…

Some of the mature Beach antiques are sure to respectfully remember John Currie and Brian Williams. Both of whom played at the top level, this is for their information and interest. This year we said goodbye to two old friends, Brian Williams and John Currie. They were both immigrants as young men, one from the U.K. and the other R.S.A. They were close to the same age and made major contributions to Canadian Rugby, especially The Toronto Nomads. They will be sadly missed by all who knew them. Our thoughts remain with Carol and Vicky. Their lives will be celebrated on Sunday Sept 8th from 2-6 at The Rose and Crown on Yonge just north of Eglinton. Please pass on the word. We hope for a good showing to toast these Rugby legends!

John Edwards – It is with a heavy heart that I have to inform you of the passing of long time Beach member John Edwards. Please pray for his family during this most difficult time. http://mountpleasantgroup.permavita.com/site/JohnEdwards1.html

Myles Martin Weekly Alumni Report for July 22nd

TRU II: Default Win VS Mississauga
TRU I: 33-15 Win VS Mississauga – I didn’t go to this game but it was apparently a route in the first half, and then Mississauga clawed their way back in a little.
ORU II: 14-22 Loss VS Scottish II’s – With over 65 players unavailable this weekend our ORU two’s came out of the gate slow. The boys on the field stepped up as much as they could but with so many players playing out of position in order to other absences it took a little while for the squad to find it’s feet. By half time we were down 0-14. The two’s rallied in typical fashion and won the second half, but ran out of time before the final whistle blew. Final Score 14-22 loss for the Beach.

ORU I: 38-21 Win VS Scottish I’s – In the greatest rivalry in sports entertainment the Beach I’s squared off against the Scottish I’s. The game opened with young Stephen Webb, hot off of his stint with the Hong Kong – China U20 National Team return to wear the number 9 Beach jersey. The game got off to a slow start with both teams making mistakes into opposition 22 and turning over the ball on chances to score. The score at half time was 5-7 for the Scottish. Beach began the second half determined to put on a clinic quickly turning on the heat with a try after the Scottish overthrew their own line out inside their 22. From then on we capitalized again and again on Scottish errors knocking in 4 more try’s. The Scottish scored two late tries to make the score appear closer than the game felt, but about 15min into the second half the game was more or less over. Final Score 38-21 for Beach. This win locks in our position as first in our division, and guarantee’s our promotion into the new Premiership (Top 8) division for next years season. This also guarantees us a top 4 seed for the McCormick Cup

Myles Martin Weekly Alumni Report for July 15th

Beach TRU II VS North Halton – Forfeit by North Halton

Beach TRU I VS Crusaders – Forfeit by Crusaders

Beach ORU II VS Peterborough II 55-5 – Not much to report here. As is typical lately for the ORU 2’s this game was never really in doubt and was a total domination. Forwards crushed the opposition pack and set up a bunch of opportunities for our backs to pull out some fancy moves and dot down some big tries. On to the next one.

Beach ORU I VS Peterborough I 40-21 – This game started out with a bang and beach pumped in quick successive try’s in the first half to put us up 28-0 at half time. Peterborough struck first in the second half to make the score 28-7. Unfortunately at the 55 minute mark star outside center Leigh Keegel suffered a significant head knock requiring ambulance attention, and the game was paused for until he could receive this attention. For anyone in attendance it was a harrowing situation while physio’s and paramedics worked to ensure Leigh’s safety, however I am pleased to let everyone know that he is okay. Leigh was assessed and released from hospital later that evening. We wish Leigh a speedy recovery and hope to see him back on the field when he is ready. Peterborough used this break in play to regather themselves and put in two quick scores to pull the game to within 7 points. With the score going into the last 10min now 28-21 with Beach the pressure was mounting when Captain Jason Park took the ball into his own hands dotting one down in the corner to pull ahead 35-21. Fortunately another quick score moments later sealed the deal 40-21.

TRU II – Beach V Dragons II: 20-0
No game took place due to Beach Default

TRU I – Beach V Dragons I: 68-12 – Not a lot to report on this one. A game was played, but after scoring the first try within the first 2 minutes of game play the writing was on the wall and there was only one way that this fixture was going to go. 80minutes later the final whistle blew with a final score of 68-12. The next three fixtures for the TRU I’s are critical as we need to sweep them all to finish first in our division.

ORU II – Beach V Ajax II: 33-5 – Ajax put up a fight, however nothing in their arsenal was going to stop the Beach ORU II’s how continued their winning ways. Typical to their form the forwards set up a strong and successful set piece, which the backs then capitalized on to slice and dice their way to multiple tries.

ORU I – Beach V Ajax I: 38-12 – We’ve got to give it to Ajax. We’ve been playing regularly for 4 years. They have never won a game against us, but man do they bring the big hits every time regardless. After three early scores it was clear that Beach was going to win this game, but you wouldn’t know that from watching a determined Ajax side who time and time again fronted up to deliver big hits and try to grind out a few tries. Once again, stand out performances from James Webb, and his fellow Queens teammate Owen Lee who connected for a beauty of a cross kick in the second half. On to Peterborough next week, and the Scottish the week after that. Two wins will see us lock up our conference in week 9 of competition. UTB!

Week 8 Fixtures – Please see the changes below – All games are at home this weekend

Thursday July 11
TRU I vs Oakville – 7:30pm

Myles Martin Weekly Alumni Report for July 1st

Last week recap – The U18 girls finally got the opportunity to put their training to the test and finished with a convincing 85-20 win over the Caledon Cavaliers. The U18 Boys 2’s grabbed their first win of the season Wednesday night with a hard fought 24-17 victory over the Barbs. The first XV narrowly lost their connect with Aurora 24-23 but stl collected 2 bonus points.

Big Shout out to our Lucus Rumball who will captain the Canadian Mens Senior side against Scotland in Ottawa this weekend.

Goodbye Rugby Volleyball – Its difficult for me to write this, but sadly Rugby volleyball has been cancelled this year. The highlight of the summer, the best day of the year, the rugby section’s largest fundraiser has been cancelled this year due to poor attendance. The last few years saw the fun event take place at Polson Pier but with increased traffic and declining numbers the organizers have made the most difficult decision to cancel the event. I hope this is temporary and the event comes back next year with more teams and more fun than ever before.
