Alum Aaron Mittler reports that the 5th Annual Lucky Lucy Casino Night is booked for Thurs Sept 7th at the Toronto Hunt Club.
This very special event is named after Aaron’s daughter, Lucy who has cystic fibrosis. The event is a fund raiser for Cystic Fibrosis Canada.
It is a “dress up” affair, tickets are $125 each and include dinner, 2 drinks, access to the Casino games and auctions.
Many Beach friends usually attend as it has been a very successful evening in the past. Tickets can be purchased at the link that I believe I have included. Great cause, great evening!
Doug Underwood – Email: email@example.com
Great seeing two nice beach wins on consecutive weekends, but doubt I will go to any more after going to club twice and not one player (ours or opposition showing up at BBC following the game. Exception is PEI Liam who was there with his lovely gal. Get it together off the field as well as on.
Brian Spanton – Email: Brian.Spanton@cra-arc.gc.ca
Good day lads, good win Saturday vs. Oakville. Our next match is Saturday August 12th at home vs Lindsay. Might be a good day to buck the trend of pinting post-game at the pitch and getting back to The BBC and laying on some beer and burgers for our guests. They are a good […]

It is that time once again to announce that the 2017 Rugby Squash tournament is back in full swing March 15th, 16th and 18th with games running from 4pm to 10pm on Wednesday and Thursday and 1pm to 4pm on Saturday. Luckily there is St. Patrick’s Day on Friday, so most of your body, save the liver, can take a little break.
This is a team format and all skill levels are welcome! There are 8 teams of 8 players ranked 1 through 8 and you will be matched up as best as possible with players of similar skill. We have occasion to make mistakes, but we fix them pretty quickly as sandbagging is frowned upon. It is based on total […]
Many of you know the “Fox” as an “Original” member of the very first Balmy Beach Rugby team (check out the photo at the club), and as a past president of the club for many years and one of few lifetime members!
The “Fox” has been fighting a very rare blood disorder for about 5 years now, and as expected it has finally reached a stage where the blood transfusions are not longer effective.
The Fox has decided to control the situation and effectively “go out” on his own terms. Fox is in good spirits and has been spending time with family and friends…mostly farting and telling old war stories! This […]
Jim Drohan is pleased to announce a new Jr Director, Chris Kalbfleisch. See Jim’s missive below! 6 Nations Broadcasts and more will be detailed soon.
“It is with great pleasure I announce that Chris Kalbfleisch will be taking on the role of Director of BBC Junior Rugby. I have included many of the BBC sections and Rugby stakeholders in this note but I ask that you share the news with any others who should be aware.
As a second row he as cleverly cropped his ears out of all photo’s. He has 30 years of Rugby starting in Ottawa High-School and club play with Ottawa Beavers. In 1999, he commenced wearing the blue and gold of the BBC and played 10 seasons […]
You are invited! Sat Dec 10 to Rugby Auction @ the club 1-4pm!
HAL ROWAN FUNDRAISER
“Looking after our own” – Sunday 11th September, 3pm @ The Granite Brewery
As many of you know, Hal has had a hard time since he suffered a stroke some years ago.
His only income comes from government pensions, augmented by the past generosity of the rugby community, mostly the Scottish, and by his own savings.) Sadly the fund established by the Scottish and his own savings are now both very low, and more money is required to maintain his hardly extravagant lifestyle.
His pension income is about $1700 a month and his expenses about $1000 more than that. The bulk of these expenses is to pay for a semi-private room in the government home he lives in. The […]
Far be it for me to try and recap the storied careers of two sporting icons, as there are countless others who can do it so much better. Nevertheless, if you were born in a certain era you got to see two immortals that we have lost in the past week. I was one of the fortunate ones to see both Ali and Gordie in their primes.
One was brash, outspoken, both reviled and loved by many, because of his ways. He often referred to himself as “the greatest.” Arguably he was the best boxer of all-time. I first saw Ali live when he trained in Boston in 1965, for his fight with Sonny Liston, in Lewiston, Maine. The other was humble […]
Our sympathies are extended to Steeler and his family upon the passing of his father. Visitation is at McDougall & Brown on Kingston Rd from 6-9 on Thursday.
Sorry I do not have any other information.
The fundraiser for my van fund this past Sunday at Brad Taylor’s Skwish Bar in the Beach was a moderate success with approximately 25 guests in attendance. We had hoped for numbers in 50 to 60 range for guests. I am grateful for Geoff Reynolds’s efforts to organize the event, Brad Taylor for hosting the event at his bar, Fred Forster for providing some incredible auction items, and everyone who supported the event. Overall, it was a great afternoon of beer, wine and food among friends. The fundraiser was also an opportunity to honour and congratulate Dan Moor and Lucas Rumball for representing the Beach and Canada at the Amerericas Rugby Championship.
I don’t have a firm total of funds raised […]

Good Evening Ladies, Gents, Rugby guys,
It is that time of year again, Rugby Squash will return during March break 2016!
For those of you who are wondering what the hell is rugby squash, I don’t blame you. It as opportunity for the squash section and the rugby section to come together for a week of fun, frivolity and the likelihood of being absolutely pissed at least 2 outta the 3 days! The good news is you don’t have to wear a helmet, but I would strongly recommend eye gear and leather pants……..just saying.
This is a FUNdraising event, with all proceeds going directly toward the rather significant budget that these guys face year in and year out for an opportunity to play […]

I am writing to express my sincere thanks and gratitude to the Alumni for their generous support of my recent campaign to help fund the costs of a winter tire package and general maintenance expenses of my wheelchair van. I am happy to say that the majority of the contributions came from rugby guys, particularly Balmy Beach RFC Alumni! Up the Beach!
Last winter was my first winter driving the new van. I learned from that experience that I would definitely need winter tires to be able to operate the van safely in our winter driving conditions with snow and ice covered roads. My van has a 12-inch lowered floor so I need […]
It is with great humility that I accepted the Harvey Jaanuson award on Friday night. I am blown away by this honour, and I can only hope to extol the virtues and attributes of the man for which the award was named. I have heard stories of Harvey, and I think that the way he approached the game is what rugby is all about – hard as nails on the field and a gentleman off of it. It is truly in the spirit of Balmy Beach rugby that we continue this tradition. As always I take pride in wearing the blue and gold, and hope to for years […]
Winning Decisively 45 – 7 over the CRU.
Matt says…I would like to send a very warm and sincere thanks to the Balmy Beach Rugby Football Club in Toronto for hosting a enjoyable and supportive fundraiser at their beautiful beach-side clubhouse. The event was full of friendly and familiar faces of all ages with plenty of kind words and offers of support. Jim Drohan, who MC’d the event as an add-on to the junior awards ceremony, was extremely generous with his kind comments of support. Over the past number of years, Jim has been the cornerstone of a blossoming beach mini-rugby program that continues to foster growth and community engagement. It’s this sense of community, where rugby feels like a way of life rather than just a sport, […]

Balmy Beach Rugby Alumni, in conjunction with the Calgary Canucks, are holding a fundraiser for Matt King on Sun. Sept 13 at the Club(11am-4pm) Matt came to the Beach from UCC and he enjoyed a very successful career with Beach and Ont Rugby. He starred at U of W and Captained Cambridge. Matt played many matches for Canada, including the 2003 World Cup. Matt was the initial coach of our Beach Academy Squad.
Matt is presently unable to work and is in constant pain from a disease known as EDS( Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome) This affliction is not curable and the treatments incur costs well above Provincial guidelines!Hence Matt’s need for assistance and […]
Good to see the boys are still dominating top of the table. Hoping you can pass this email on. Hope all is well back home. Life’s great down under, let me tell ya.
I’ve been playing for the University of Queensland here in Brisbane. Carol and I are living in an apartment in St. Lucia, a suburb of Brisbane, and only a few minutes walk to the campus and our fields. It’s Winter down here, but we’re still feeling the sunshine in the low 20’s, so I can’t complain.
Rugby is going well for me. I arrived mid season, so I’ve had to work my way up to the 1st grade team, which is who I’m playing with now. We’re in […]

Nine members of Balmy Beach Rugby Football Club’s original 1955 team were present for the festivities, held at Toronto’s Balmy Beach Club on May 22.
(TORONTO, ON) – It was six decades ago that twenty teenagers banded together, bringing a mix of competitive spirit, raw talent, a desire to learn a new sport, and a never-back-down attitude to form Balmy Beach’s inaugural rugby side.
The rest, as they say, is history.
On the evening of May 22, more than 225 current club members, alumni, and special guests packed Toronto’s iconic Balmy Beach Club to celebrate the roots of the rugby club; […]

Cup Photos October 2014
WOW! A Cracker! Our 14th Cup is in the books. 27-22 over the Scottish. We continued to play with skill and poise as we have all year. This time, however the Scottish seemed determined to throw us off track with a relentless attack of their own and almost succeeded, but not quite! To a man, each Beacher was pushed to give his all and it proved enuf as we hung on with a stalwart defense in the waning minutes to thwart siege after siege by the Scots. Sure made the beer taste even better! Excellent job, great season. Lots of hard work with kudos to all.
Beach 2’s save the best for last in 38-25 victory over Scottish. With a somewhat sluggish start we were behind until the last 20 min when the afterburners kicked in and we roared away to victory and the first cup of the day! With “the Dude’s” leadership, Bushe controlling the helm and the speed of the younger lads, its a hard combo to beat. Great job and enjoyable to see. A fitting and deserved end to the season.
