RUGBY WEEK ONE
Hope all you Mother’s enjoyed your DAY!

Blues in South America
Ont Blues complete a successful tour with two victories. Tues over Salta, a Provincial Argentine side and Sat. 27-16 over Uragauyan “Los Teros”, National side.
Ryan MacSween scores a big try! Hope he ran into Dick the deviate after the game!

Beach Rugby – Sr. Women
Open defense of their championship season with a sqeaker but to the good side! 11-10
Zoe Smith, try and two penalties by Sophia! great start!

Sr Men
4′s and 3′s play a combo side at Wanderer’s . Creek could not field a thirds team and they showed a dearth of numbers at their own park against our 2′s and 1′s. Beach score a number of unconverted tries as, I guess, the kicker didn’t make the trip. A game highlight was the game ref, someone named Harry(!) to do a physical impossibility. I bet it was worth the yellow card. Big win for beach.

Two’s
Leaving off from last season’s regular schedule but sporting a slew of fresh faces The Blue and Gold easily handle the Creek on this day.

One’s
Th is different! Cup Hangover? Rugby rope-a-dope? 9 new faces in the lineup from last seasons Cup Game? Maybe it was the lack of fan support? Anyway–halftime score Camels 18-Beach 0!!!

Next weekend Victoria Day Holiday No Rugby!

Oh yea, final was Beach 40-Creek 28!!!!!

Hello All,

Just wafting through this green clouded Sunday after four days of debauchery and trying to remember what happened in the last 96 hours; woke up on the front lawn at 4 a.m. in a green hat and Guinness sticker on my forehead and I remembered.

After a very controversial final, in which the score mysteriously changed during the final epic match between John May and Andrew Wells and an anticlimactic boat race, it was determined that the Green team was the true winner by a mere one point and a sip of beer. The anchor of the winning boat race team, the aforementioned John May, had an extremely wet T-Shirt and a puddle on the floor beneath him and yet the judge St. Patrick ruled with an iron fist, the Green team, the Green team, how apropos!

Congratulations to John May, Rob Ptolomey (Roger Morito), Norm Nielsen, David Giles, Peter Cuthbert, Corey Appleton (Tyler Allen), Amanda Babich and Susan Howatt who reign supreme!

To the Red team, my team, the runner up……apologies for my pathetic effort during the boat race where the previously noted 96 hours of debauchery caught up with me, just narrowly averted a pheasant on the new rug and coasted in to a second place finish behind a very sloppy John May; congratulations to Gavin Shuell(Andy Wells), Ryan Anderson (Leon Turner), Neil Longley (Peter Bouffard), Jesse Henkenhaf, Paul Myers (Frank Meli), Brian Spanton and the anchor for the boat race next year Kim Hines.

Third place went to the Pinks and included Larry Frizelle, Jules Marsen, Matt Goff, Peter Bouffard, Keegan Harbarjan, Huge, Claudio Placidi and Jacki Nelson and fourth place Yellow, the leaders after two days, included Pat Salvatore, Jeff Tomlinson, David Morgan, Andrew Bush, Craig Telfer, Dave Webb, Bogart Edwards (Corina Wilkes) & Janelle Ritchie.

Special thanks to all of the great sponsors and prize donors of the tourney; Labatt, Molson, The Dragon, Chris Buckley & Eric Thomson (Pernod-Ricard). Also thanks to Rugby Canada, Fred Forster and Labatt for their support of the raffle for Huggy’s Van fund! Thank you to Fuel for their great food, Kevin Quinn for his great art work on the T-Shirt, Steve Torrance for arranging the print for the T’s and last but not least thanks to Club president Chris Buckley, Club Manager Charlene Provan and the entire Balmy Beach staff for their support of our event!!

The real winner in all of this, thanks to all of you, is Balmy Beach rugby and Huggy’s Van Fund and I am sincerely grateful to each and every one of you for putting yourself forward to be part of it! The proceeds of the tournament will allow us to donate $1,500 to the rugby section and with help from the hockey section, the six nations crowd and a very generous private donor, $2,000 to Huggy’s effort and for that I am extremely grateful and I know Huggy appreciates the support!

I am off to check in to my private room at the Betty Ford Clinic and remind you to check your IN box next year for your invite to the 2013 Gong Show we call Rugby Squash!

Cheers, 240

P.S. If you didn’t receive your T-Shirt please let me know and I will get it to you and if you didn’t get beer tickets, Spaz used them.

<a target=_blank" href="http://balmybeachrugby.com/pdf/Rugby_OntarioFinalPF.pdf">Download the Sponsorship Package for the Ontario Blues

The 2011 Marshall and McCormick Cup champion Balmy Beach Rugby Football Club will hold a fundraiser in support of the Ontario Blues, the current national senior mens champions, on Sunday, April 1, 4 pm at their club house on Lake Ontario.

The Blues are about to embark on their most challenging season ever, including a trip to South America this May, and Beach have taken a leadership position in helping raise the necessary funds.

A silent and open auction will highlight the afternoon, with prizes ranging from travel points, sports and entertainment event tickets, cottage rentals, Rugby Ontario, Blues, Uruguay and Rugby Canada gear and more.

Many former Ontario and Canada players such as Kyle Nichols, Adam Marshall, Scott Hendry, Jeff Tomlinson and others, will be in attendance along with Blues and RC officials.

The Blues will play Chile (ranked 23rd in the world) on Saturday, May 5 in Santiago, and Uruguay (ranked 21st) on Sunday, May 13 in Montevideo, along with a mid-week game against Salta Province in Argentina.

The Blues regular season will begin on Saturday, August 25 at home to the Atlantic Rock.

“Obviously, we have a huge challenge ahead of us” said Blues Manager Mark Winokur, “but its absolutely fantastic to see clubs such as Beach step up and agree to help; the support of the clubs is vital to anything we do and this is a great step.

For rugby in Ontario and Canada this is a great opportunity and this event will really kick it off”

The Blues will play Canada Maple Leafs at their brand new facility in Langford BC on Saturday April 7 before leaving for Chile on May 2.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Rugby Squash is back again this year and slated for the March Break, starting:

Wednesday March 14, 2012 from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Continuing March 15, 2012 from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.

No games on March 16, 2012

The finals are slated for Saturday March 17, 2012 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Finishing just in time to start the St. Patrick’s Day party at the club.

If you’re not drunk on Wednesday or Thursday or both, you have absolutely no excuse on Saturday.

This is a team format, 8 players on each team ranked accordingly from one through eight and each player is guaranteed 2 games, one Wednesday and one Thursday. At the end of play on Thursday the top four teams, in terms of total points, moves on to the finals on Saturday, the other four teams commiserate in the lounge with Tequila shots. The format is games to 25 points, rally point which means that a point is awarded on every serve and there is no need to win by 2, first player to 25 is declared the winner and must buy beer. That being said, wins are nice as you get 25 points, however, losses are OK too so long as you get a lot of points for your team. If you really shit the bed, there is always the chance your mates will pick you up, they might laugh, but they will pick you up.

For $50 you get entry into the tourney, a meal on Thursday night, a souvenir T-Shirt, a couple of beers and the opportunity to rub shoulders with many of the has been’s, wannabe’s, ne’er-do-well’s, stevedores and circus geeks of the rugby and squash world we all love at the Balmy Beach Club. There will also be a raffle for $10 per ticket in support of our dear friend Huggy and you can check out his crusade at his website www.hugsvanfund.ca; my hope is that we can raise $500 to put towards this great cause, check out the website! There will be a prize valued at least $500 for this raffle so if you can come prepared to get involved that would be fantastic!!

Please note that there is a schedule set up from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. and we try to follow this schedule as best as possible, however, not everyone is a teacher, salesperson, house husband, artist, trust fund baby or real estate agent and actually have to work normal work hours, take care of kids, wash dishes, do laundry and whatever else it is that people do and thus the schedule is somewhat loose and thus if you are going to way be off schedule please make a point of contacting your opponent and ensure you are going to arrive at approximately the same time and if that fails, I would recommend that you start drinking.

It is truly fun, the squash is secondary and it is an excellent opportunity to get out of the house and have a few laughs, hopefully at the expense of others! All of the proceeds from the tournament go directly to support the Balmy Beach Rugby Club!

Please sign up early, there are only 64 spots and they go quickly and please forward this on to anyone who you think may be interested as I have lost a few e-mails from last year due to some technical f***king difficulties!

Thanks again for all of your support and help making this event as fun it has become over the past many years. Cheers, Gord Young a.k.a. 240
