Canada Wins! – Canada victorious in first leg of three in World Cup repechage. A 65-19 decisive victory over Kenya. First time in a while that Canadian squad has looked productive and confidant for almost an entire 80 minutes! Pretty experienced side for us for a change and lets hope it continues next Sat vs Germany. We need to win all three to be sure of qualifiing. Passing of Gord Ramsay – Colin James asked me to send an email to all of you letting you know that a Celebration of Gord Ramsey’s Life will be held next Thursday, Oct 18th starting at 1:00. Further details are below and attached.

Gordon William Ramsey Memorial

As far back as everybody can remember and I apologize if I do not get all the history correct, Gord started playing rugby for the Toronto Saracens back in 1961. In fact Colin remembers that Gord was a Life Member of the Saracens before Colin joined in 1965, as Gord helped the club financially to get well established in the Rugby community at that time. Gord may have been the first Canadian-born player to play for the Saracens. Skip Ellis remembers that Gord and his brother Gerry, plus Glen Hamilton and Lorne Fisher all went to Danforth Tech, probably around 1961. Knowing all those guys they were probably at Danforth Tech for 6 or 7 years…..Gord and his brother may have played a few years for Balmy Beach before joining the Saracens.

Visit to Club By Al Major! AN INVITATION by Al Major:

  • Malvern Collegiate late 1950’s
  • Balmy Beach rugby early 1960’s
  • U of T law school and captain of U of T rugby team mid
    1960’s

Al has lived in Burnaby BC for the past 50 years. He will be in Toronto next week and hopes to connect with some old friends. He will be at the Balmy Beach Club Thurs Oct 25 th from 8:00pm on Oct 25th is the same night as the club kids Halloween party so an earlier arrival is not recommended.

Sr Rugby Awards Dinner Fri Oct 19th, 2018.

Info re Al Charron’s induction into Ontario Hall of Fame – The BBAA is pleased to announce and support the induction of Al Charron into the Ontario Sports Hall of Fame. While a fierce rival on the field Al has always been supportive of our Club; as a role model and mentor to young players, to making many appearances and presentations. When asked he always delivers. Here are the details:

  • Website: https://oshof.ca/ – you’ll note that Al is the first and only Ontario HoF inductee in the sport of rugby!
  • Venue: Westin Harbour Castle Hotel
  • Date: October 23rd
  • Time: 5:30
  • Dress Code: they say black tie, business attire and ‘Festive’ attire… so I say any rugby blazers that you still fit into… or not… would be appropriate!
  • Cost for BBC members $150

Al Charron, a former Canadian captain, is considered by many Rugby experts, as the greatest forward Canada has ever produced. Between 1990 and 2003, Charron earned 76 caps for Canada – remarkably, all as a starter – and represented his country at four Rugby World Cups. Five times he suited up with the famous Barbarians all-star squad and was part of the World 15’s side that faced Argentina in 1999. He has also played professionally in England and France, but Charron has always called Ontario home. He is being inducted with the likes of Blue Jays Tom Henke and new Jersey Devil Scott Stevens! The BBAA has purchased and is subsidizing a table of 10 for the event. For those interested in attending the cost is $150 per seat.

Lots of action in the last few days!

Goodbyes – Farewell to two ladies, Linda Gage and Sandy Sealy/Clifford. Celebrations of Life held in Brampton and Scarborough last week. may you rest in Peace!

Rugby – To summarize the final week of 2018 rugby action, it was good to see that even though we had not advanced to any Cup Finals, we at least took seriously our participation on Cup Day. The Beach 1’s took Burlington to task with an energetic 76-5 whomping! Earlier in the day, Beach 2’s also bore down on an unsuspecting Saracens squad with a 40-10 shellacing. Once again it was necessary to create our own trophy for the events!!! Perhaps this foretells success for 2019. Lets hope that RO can create a more effective and relevant schedule so we see rugby in October!!!

Fall Dinner – Unqualified success with over 120 guests!! Fantastic to see the return of several Ladies from our ninties Sr ladies team! Not be outdone, our present Sr Ladies squad showed up in numbers to support Lisa DeSario who was this years recipient of the Ed Caterer Award. Red Lipsett spoke on behalf of the 1968 Carling Cup winners as they celebrated 50 years since their victory! Huggy had his family in tow as we commemorated the past 25 years since his catastropic spinal injury. Lastly we announced 7 of our BEACH BEST 15! More in a later missive! Thank you all for your participation!. Tons of Dinner Photos – Click Here

Ontario Arrows – Canada’s 1st pro squad gets formal acceptance into North Americas pro League for 2019 MLR

Not much good stuff this week, – Firstly, the very sad part. I am sorry to announce the passing of Linda Gage! Linda passed last Fri evening after a long and difficult battle. Typical of the Gage stoic nature, both Bruce and Haydn showed up for action at Sat game in Brantford. Don’t know how they do it! No details yet re funeral services but I will send them when they arrive. Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to Bruce and the rest of the Gage family.

Some very sad news to report in that Sandy Sealy/Clifford,, Mike (Cec) Clifford’s wife, passed earlier this week. Cec is a rugby Alum and former jr Administrator and our hearts go out to he and his daughters. I have no other details at this time re cause and I believe there will be Visitation next week and a Celebration of Sandy’s Life, probably on Wed Sept 26. I will provide details when I get them.Far too young…….. Our prayers are with the family and friends.

Last Sat Results!
Beach 1’s continue with some great effort and despite the intense heat and humidity, managed to subdue a very game Lindsay side 47-10. The score flatters the Beach as Lindsay had a lot of the play and made some crucial errors close in when threatened by a stiff Beach defence. Outside speed and terrific support proved the difference. Kind of a shame that game was played on a high school field and with no touch judges( 1/4 final Cup Game)

Both Beach 2’s suffered losses. Beach Keenan lost at Home to a very well prepared Hamilton squad( coached by Scott Hendry!) score was 42-10 Beach Marshall squad goes down to Fletcher’s North 22-10.in Gee Gage Cup action Ontario Arrows defeat Glendale 40-18

Champions? Everywhere!!! – Beach Academy clearly took the bit to overpower Vaughn Yeomen last Sat! A bit of a wet track did not derail the Blue and Gold with a 38-10 victory in the TRU Premiership! Although the lads dearly want to attain even loftier heights, the powers that be will not allow promotion as a Club cannot have 2 teams in the same division(Marshall) Vaughn will advance to seek that goal. Excellent team play by both forwards and backs and a well deserved win. Many of the Academy players will now find themselves as either subs for the Beach 1’s in upcoming Cup play or on the roster for the Beach 2’s in Gee Gage Cup play.

Ontario Blues – Champions again with a tight win on Sun over the Rock! 22-17

As a second row he as cleverly cropped his ears out of all photo’s. He has 30 years of Rugby starting in Ottawa High-School and club play with Ottawa Beavers. In 1999, he commenced wearing the blue and gold of the BBC and played 10 seasons – primarily with the Mighty Thirds of TRU legend. Chris has a deep commitment to the club and rugby is a passion. Chris is a multi-sport junior coach (rugby, hockey and baseball) with his Respect in Sport and IRB Level 1 certification. He started coaching junior rugby at the Beach in 2015 and is committed to making the experience a fun and engaging way to bring kids into the rugby community and grow our great game.

I greatly look forward to supporting Chris in the transition to his new role and continuing in my capacity as treasure for the program in 2017.

For those of you already committed to the program for 2017 I thank you in advance for your continued support. We are in the hunt for additional coaching support for 2017 with a very specific need for help at U16. We have lots of need for additional help outside coaching and anyone interested in assisting with the program should contact Chris . We have on-going needs for; team/parent communication, equipment management, fund raising, field painting, tour management etc”…Jim Drohan

Another excellent evening! – Rugby Ontario fetes Hall of Famers and League Medal Winners!

Beach Blue and Gold is in much evidence as Red Lipsett, Tony McGann and David Lougheed are inducted into Provincial rugby Hall of fame! 50-60 Beach Alumni turned out at the Maples Banquet Hall in Mississagua on Sat in this gala event.A well deserved compliment to the inductees as we were honoured to share the time with the families and friends of our comrades. Peeter Oolup spoke on Red’s behalf and Brian Spanton for Tony and as expected, did a terrific job! The evening was topped off by a new RO Award, the President’s award which went to Haydn Gage and Conor McCann for their heroic efforts to resuscitate Eric Shannon earlier in the season. Truly an appropriate tribute on a super evening!
