Balmy Beach Rugby Best 15 Ballot sheet Please print!

A little late this week! (Lake Simcoe misses me already!)

Last week’s results
If teeth had skin…well you know the saying! Some close calls

Our Sr ladies just squeaked by the gals from Brampton 33-32! We remain in second spot.

Beach Academy 1’s employed a furious 2nd half to overcome a halftime deficit to beat the Blues 25-21 and remain in first place, unbeaten on the season!!!!

Beach Academy 2’s fared not so well going down, 50 -10 to the Blues

Beach 2’s also eked out a win at Stoney Creek 19-17

Our Premier lads, Beach 1’s scored at the gun for a 33-28 victory over the Camels!! We remain in 3rd place in our division of 4

Some added info in that Brantford went down for the first time this season losing to Lindsay! The Irish beat the Scottish! and Peterborough( from our division) beat the Cru!

2 Games left for us!! 3 for everyone else as we have Beach Volleyball coming up on July 21 and have already had the makeup game.

The setup after the league games is to have the top 2 teams in the east and west divisions play to determine seed placement for the McCormick Cup in Sept. The bottom 2 teams in each division also play each other for Cup seeding BUT ALSO to see who is relegated!!!

Saturday Games – Beach women up to the same tricks drubbing the Yeowomen (Lions) 65-10

Beach Academy 2’s win by default over Cobourg
– Beach Academyhang on to defeat Coburg27-19 after Cobourg came back from 22-0 to 22-19 before we score late to salt it away!

Beach 2’s win a tight back and forth match with Irish 2’s 24-17

Beach 1’s lose a somewhat strange game in the rain as our forwards dominated set play but we could not seem to secure the perimeters! The final 36-26 to Irish!

Last Weeks Action – Thurs June 07 saw the Beach Ladies suffer their first defeat at the hands of the Cru from Oakville

Beach 1’s and 2’s – tangled with old nemesis, The Scottish, and came up on the short end of the stick!
Beach 2’s having a late surge only to succumb 38-22. Beach 1’s put on a decent show, at least much better than earlier efforts, losing 24-7. basic platforms were much inproved and quite a spark was provided by Cedarbrae Alum Mathew Muft……..a Something to build on!

Canada vs Scotland – The SWcots on top 48-10

This Weeks Action
5 Sr games
Beach Ladies in Barrie at Noon
Beach Academy 1’s and 2’s at Fletchers vs the Saracen’s
Beach 1’s and 2’s at Oakville vs the Cru at 1:30 and 3pm

Canada vs Russia – Sat June 16

Most of our Junior squads are springing into action but no notice of times or locales as yet!

Canada vs Scotland on Saturday June 9th – 9pm TSN1 – Beacher Lucas Rumball starts at #6!!!

Reminder!! – Beach Vs Tor Scottish – Sat June 9th – Beach 2’s at NOON – Beach 1’s at 1:30 @ HOME

Good to be on the plus side again! Beach 1’s successful in Peterborough with a lightning shortened 31-13 victory. Much more cohesion and “jump” in the lads although still not without some warts! Great setting at the Pagans club and good hosts as our twos were also successful with a 50-22 romp for our first legit victory!

Sr Women enjoyed another winning Saturday with a big win over the Miss. Blues 45-19

Last weeks games

Sr Women continued to power thru the opposition with 77-7 victory over Brampton. Sounds like something is cooking here!!!!

Academy 2’s get a drubbing from Bay Street although lots of action and no finish which left the lads out of position to defend turnovers.
Academy 1’s put forth a terrific finish with 3 scores in the last 8 minutes. Two unconverted tries brought them to 21-20 down with but a minute to go. Determined poseesion from the KO and march downfield resulted in a penalty for us about 20 metres out! Kick is good at the gun, we win 23-21!

Beach 2’s – Alot like the Academy 2’s with lots of breaks but no finish with no positioning to defend allows Brantfdord the opportunity to go the distance several time. Final Brantford 34-Beach 22

Beach 1’s – A repeat of last October’s Cup Final and Brantford shows they are still the masters of our league. Same old problem as they push our forwards around in the first half esp with a try at the halftime whistle to go up 21-7. hurts! No defensive pressure from our back row allows them too much space to operate and they take advantage. Our backs were game but every good squad needs a solid link between the two to achieve success especially against a quality side like Brantford. Tough going but we hung in for a final of Brantford38- Beach19. We’ll be better!

This Week
Not sure of the reason but I presume the Canada Game in Edmonton vs Scotland has determined a special schedule this week. Beacher, Rumble makes the long list and in fact, Captained Canada Selects last week vs Ontario Arrows!

Sr Women – Thurs Night at HOME at 7:30 vs the Cru

Sat June 9th
12:00 noon Beach 2’s vs Scottish
1:30pm Beach 1’s vs Scottish

Academy- No Games scheduled?

Last Thurs. evening Beach 1’s lost for the second time this season. an ungainly , 28-10 defeat to the Scottish. Too many errors, 6 Yellow cards(1 became Red) and too many give aways of the ball after good advancements, did us in. More speed and aggression from the back row is definitely in need to link forwards and backs.. Hopefully this week will see two determined practices as with a10 game schedule, early losses could sink the ship prematurely!

This Week – Tbe 1’s and 2’s visit Ontario’s Queen City, Peterborough, to take on the newly promoted and very keen Pagans KO at 1:30 and 3 pm
The Academies, 1 and 2, Host the Beavers from Brampton at 1:30 and 3.
The Senior Ladies host the Mississagua Blues at Noon

Back in the saddle! And so the season commences and with a whimper, I hear. Our lads get outsmucked by those Lindsay lads, again! 49-12 loss. Not a great start when considering we have only 10 league fixtures with which to work! Perhaps the scrummage and forward lessons from last Cup Final have faded?

The other Sr teams fared much better, although Lindsay was unable to field even a second team and we are awarded a 20-0 default.
The Academy squadjumped in front to trounce the Bucs, 54-15 whilst the Academy 2 also handled their opponent 22-0
The Beach Sr ladies had an ominous start with a 65-0 whomping of the Yeo Lions

Thurs May 17 – Beach 1 vs Toronto Scottish at Fletcher’s at 7 p.m. Should be a cracker!

The season is over and by all accounts another enjoyable and successful one it was. Different at times and not always quality rugby but entertaining with the addition of some new faces we look forward to next season! However we still have some celebrating to do!!!!

The action ends for another season!

Beach 2’s – Ended on a high note with a large victory over the Cru. Physical game but with the “right” attitude.BOTH teams had the correct idea in that they both had hand made trophies presented to themselves from which they could drink!!! The best “swap” of the day was when Cameron Morgan left as touch judge to be replaced by a young female. !!!!Noisy sideline during the Cup……

Beach 1’s Cup Final – One of the fastest and most physical games I have seen in long time. as distinct underdogs I feel we gave a terrific effort. We came back in the second half to tie it up 27-27 and had a legitimate shot at a win, but not to be as the final was 40-27 Brantford. Difficult to score when the set pieces were not stable enough to generate lots of quality ball and we seemed to lose focus in the very late stages of the game. 5 Yellow cards to us and 3 to Brantford would lead one to believe that the refereeing was not at the same standard as the game itself!, Entertaining, exciting, only the second time in 17 attempts have we lost the Final!!! Excellent crowd of Beach supporters although Union officials did their best to interfere with our enjoyment of the day ,but not to dwell on that just now! Pics on website soon!

Alumni Fall Dinner – Great time last Thurs. as 5 originals joined Ken Bingham and Hasher McMurray in becoming Capped with our new Beach Caps! Present were Gord Forbes, Don and Roger Oliver, Sam Singer and Tom Redwood. Also capped were Gerry deClute and Jack Baird as having our 2 major sponsors for such a long and continuous time( since mid-seventies!) Ian McConvey had the group in stitches with his presentation of the Caterer Award to current 1st team player, Chris Hewitt aka The Tooth Fairy/Whyte Whale. Congratulations!

Rugby Announcement! – Rugby Ontario announces that Kyle Nichols of Balmy Beach will be inducted into the Ontario Rugby Hall of Fame in Nov 25, 2017!

Also Being inducted is the Balmy Beach 1’s of the undefeated, untied 1980-1981 Cup winning squads! This includes the players of the Owen Sound victory in the Cup run of 1980!!! Congratulations to all. The dinner is Nov 25th–Details to follow.

International – Good luck to Lucas Rumball who is with Canada A in South America for 3 matches starting this weekend.

Ed Caterer Award – Please forward nominations to me for this prestigious award. I have attached the qualifications. Award will be presented at Oct 19 Fall Dinner. Previous winners—Gerry Allen, Haydn Gage.

  • ALWAYS “ESPRIT DE COUR” RE Club activities

5th Annual Lucky Lucy Casino Night – Thurs Sept 7th $125.00 – Toronto Hunt Club

Fund raiser for Cystic Fibrosis!!!

Last games of August – 2 wins and a loss

Given some interesting logistics the Academy 1 players and Beach 2’s actually switched roles for this outing and it proved to be a wise decision. At noon the vaughn Yeomen who are quite strong played our Academy(but really Beach 2’s) and we lost a very close match 27-24. The actual Academy 1 Squadhad a great match and ended their season on a positive note by beating the Markham Irish 2’s

Beach 1’s also continued in a upward trend by handling the Irish 49-24. The negative aspect is a red card for Mark MacSween.

Academy 1 finish the season out of the playoffs but in a respectable 5th spot. Academy2’s finish in 6 position.

It seems that all of my info come from the reprobates in the attachment!!!!

Alum Aaron Mittler reports that the 5th Annual Lucky Lucy Casino Night is booked for Thurs Sept 7th at the Toronto Hunt Club.

This very special event is named after Aaron’s daughter, Lucy who has cystic fibrosis. The event is a fund raiser for Cystic Fibrosis Canada.

It is a “dress up” affair, tickets are $125 each and include dinner, 2 drinks, access to the Casino games and auctions.

Many Beach friends usually attend as it has been a very successful evening in the past. Tickets can be purchased at the link that I believe I have included. Great cause, great evening!

He started coaching junior rugby at the Beach in 2015 and is committed to making the experience a fun and engaging way to bring kids into the rugby community and grow our great game.

I greatly look forward to supporting Chris in the transition to his new role and continuing in my capacity as treasure for the program in 2017.

For those of you already committed to the program for 2017 I thank you in advance for your continued support. We are in the hunt for additional coaching support for 2017 with a very specific need for help at U16. We have lots of need for additional help outside coaching and anyone interested in assisting with the program should contact Chris . We have on-going needs for; team/parent communication, equipment management, fund raising, field painting, tour management etc”…Jim Drohan

Another excellent evening! – Rugby Ontario fetes Hall of Famers and League Medal Winners!

Beach Blue and Gold is in much evidence as Red Lipsett, Tony McGann and David Lougheed are inducted into Provincial rugby Hall of fame! 50-60 Beach Alumni turned out at the Maples Banquet Hall in Mississagua on Sat in this gala event.A well deserved compliment to the inductees as we were honoured to share the time with the families and friends of our comrades. Peeter Oolup spoke on Red’s behalf and Brian Spanton for Tony and as expected, did a terrific job! The evening was topped off by a new RO Award, the President’s award which went to Haydn Gage and Conor McCann for their heroic efforts to resuscitate Eric Shannon earlier in the season. Truly an appropriate tribute on a super evening!
